Samantha's Transformational Leadership Story
When I chose to continue my nursing journey at Stanford Health Care, after transferring from another organization, in 2017 as a Clinical Nurse II, I never imagined that I would be in the same organization in six years, far less that I would be an Interim Patient Care Manager. At Stanford Healthcare I have had the opportunity to be my unit’s unit educator, chair of my unit’s Shared Leadership Council, and transition into management in the APCM and interim PCM roles. I have had many opportunities to continue to grow and develop and I attribute that to the incredible role models of leadership that I have seen both at the unit level and during my time in Shared Leadership in organizational wide leaders.
My first foray into leadership was when I had the opportunity to participate in the Johnson & Johnson and Sigma Leadership pilot program. I subsequently became a member of Stanford Medicine’s Sigma Theta Tau Chapter. When I became the Chair of Coordinating Council my passion for the organization, as well as my desire to continue a quest of personal development, blossomed.
While being mentored, I was constantly given the opportunity to help guide, support, and engage those around me, which in turn energized and increased my own engagement. I was constantly challenged and encouraged to grow; given opportunities to participate in the organization at a high level. This increased my own confidence in my practice and ideas. In my role of unit educator, I helped to initiate a peer-led study model to increase specialty certification rates which I subsequently had the opportunity to present at the Magnet Conference in 2022!
My personal highlight of 2022 was being able to go to Magnet Conference surrounded by peers and mentors. Another top highlight for 2022 was having the opportunity to bring together my peers and colleagues in person for our Shared Leadership Annual Retreat in December of 2022; after being only able to connect virtually for two years it was a wonderful moment to reconnect on a more personal level.
Transformational leaders are those that engage and empower others. Transformational leaders are those that embrace and offer other’s opportunities, bringing others with them as they continue to grow, and promote a spirit of inclusivity and recognize the importance of diversity.
As I continue working on being a transformational leader, I hope to embody the values and culture of those that have supported me. I am so personally thankful for the opportunities that Stanford Medicine has continued to offer me to continue to grow and develop as a leader and I look forward to many more years with the organization!
